There's nothing to prove that other animals experience or are capeable of the same cognitive processes as us, so for them it's easy - genes and instincts take care of it all, and the aim of the game is just to procreate. Now I'm crazy about animals, generally more than humans, but I'm not sure if we could say that an animal "loves" its mate. It's more likely compatible genes. Even if they do, they don't ask "why" or "how" or have egocentric tendencies or wonder about the future or get worried about what all the other animals will think, or anything like that, they just live in the moment and do what feels natural, so naturally they have a better time of it.

I think there are different "levels" of love.
Some folks can be perfectly content with each other, without having to be concerned about,"how do I keep the fire hot in this relationship." Their needs and desires aren't particularly complicated and they don't make big demands on each other or have overly unrealistic expectations.
Some folks have a well developed sense of love, appreciating all that the other person has to offer in the relationship.
And, at the other end of the spectrum, there are those people - many of them hurt from a previous relationship - that just set the "bar" so high, that few, if any, can get over it.

Why would it be simple for animals?
Anyway, since we use language and like definitions, love is a big problem. We use the word 'love' very often but we can all imagine how hard it must be to describe the meaning of it so it becomes clear to someone who does not know the meaning of 'love'. Love is undefinable, we say, and that makes it so complicated; we are intellectually stupid when it comes to love.

"Love" is complicated because human beings are. And because so few think about all the different kinds of love - for an infatuation, for lust, for children, for dear friends, etc. Also I think, because so many of us don't really grow up - we treat love as a kind of walking stick for support, or as something bestowing the rights of possession, instead of real care for "other". And then, of course, we change, and so do those we "love" - but because we focus on ourselves, we resist letting go, or growing with those we love, or appreciate the changes in love itself. So we make love more difficult and painful for ourselves. Animals may be attached to each other but are unlikely to be capable of all the nuances of love that humans are. As in everything, our potential strength can be our greatest weakness.

I think you have answered yourself without realising. Humans have a very much expanded 'sensory' system - much bigger brains, so all 'senses' are much more complicated.
Animals seem to understand love because we focus our meaning onto their activities, but, in fact, a lot of their behaviour, while it keeps to mother nature's intent, seems very brutal to us. When a lion takes over a new pride, it immediately kills all the existing cubs because they do not carry his genes.
We have overruled a lot of this type of nature's requirements and it means we need some very complex ethics and morality. It's the complexity of love that makes it so meaningful to humans.

When we experience unconditional love, it is pure and simple because we are "unconditional love". However many of us put some "condition" on top of this (IE I'll only love you if you do ..........). Some mistaken "possession" as love that's why many relationship are controlled. Many have set too many expectations.
When one sets an expectation, what one is actually setting is for frustration.

Don't ask me!!! I have been obediently chanting the lyrics of "Foreigner's" 'I wanna Know What love is" but to no avail, love doesn't seem to wanna know me, hah!! lol
For the case of animals, they go by their instinct upon choosing a prospective mate and do their thingies lol. I am confident love is out of the question=)

We humans are far more complex than our animals on this planet. I wish it were simpler. But then we wouldn't have made fire, electricity etc!
