As for 'Orwell' he used this after the River Orwell which ran through Ipswich in England, for 'George', as far as I know from his biography, he decided to use this since it would signify Britishness, that is, such a first name is a normal one for an Englishman. He meant it to reveal his British identity to readers and to those who happen to see his pen name on any bookcover of his literary works.
According to Eleanor Jaques, he announced, "I'm going to call myself George Orwell, because it's a good round English name" (p. 126).

I didn't know he was not born George Orwell. He was born Eric Arthur Blair. I can't tell from the Wiki article if he legally changed his name or used George Orwell as his pen name. Or whe George Orwell and not John Doe. Any biographies of Orwell in your library? If not, check 823.91 and the fiction section for his books. Since he is a significant writer, there should be a mini bio in at least one of them. Good luck searching.

There isn't any info b/c no one can pinpoint an actual reason. The name just appeared on one of his many, many unsuccessful manuscripts one day and then kept appearing. There's speculation that 'Orwell' was the name of a man he met in one of the hostel things he stayed in while living as a tramp, but no one realls knows.
