Pain is very important because it helps us to survive. It let us know where the danger is,e.g. it keeps us away from a hot surface. This is the physical pain.

However, there is another kind of pain, the chronic / emotional pain, the one we can do without. This is the type of pain we feel when unjust was done to us. This is the type of pain we can choose to let go. Because this type of pain does not serve us.

Physical pain is unavoidable. So as the emotional pain, however the suffering is optional.

I think there are at least two general sources of the all the pain we experience in the world.
1. We are all too often our own worst enemies, acting on impulse without thinking through the consequences of what we do, and acting in terms of our own immediate gratification in spite of how this may only hurt other people (and, in the long run, probably ourselves). People lie, cheat, break promises, act with cruelty--sometimes out of anger and hatred, but often simply disregarding any serious consideration of the pain this will be causing others.
2. We are victims of forces in the world over which we have no control--storms, floods, and natural calamities of all kinds--and can have our lives totally devastated as a result of such things.

We can't do much about the forces of nature that can cause us so much misery, but at least we have the potential of doing something about man's inhumanity toward man--we can think ahead about the likely consequences of what we feel like doing before just jumping into something regrettable; we can try to be kind and do thoughtful things for other people; we can try to keep in mind the basic principles that we cherish most and live more in accordance with them.

Pain, and the avoidance of it, was an esential part of our evolution. As we developed bigger brains, we abstracted physical pain and developed mental pain, which can be much worse. In a balanced world pain is kept to a minimum by nature - otherwise it would not serve a useful purpose.

Unfortunately, we have not been clever enough - we have unbalanced the world, and the vast majority of pain serves no purpose.

My motto is: Alleviate what you can in yourself and others, but don't develop too much of the useless kind doing it.

There are two kinds of pain. Internal and external. We seem to be our own worst enemies, so there is a lot of internal, mostly emotional and spiritual.. External could be physical, as disease, enemies or even so called friends. Natural disaster. We are survivors, pain is part of our process of growing and learning how to defend ourselves. There is no why, there just is.

pain is a part of life. We run from it in search of pleasure and that wicked pain always catches up with us sooner or later.

I don't know. You would have thought that if an omni-benevolent, omnipotent God existed, that he would not allow this.
