WW1 occurred at the time same time as women in Europe and North America were engaged in the suffrage struggle.
During both wars the roles of women were permanently changed. Women were to be wives, and raise childern and may work in certain areas until they were married. Except on the farms.
During both wars women were taken into the factories and filled the jobs that were left open when the men went off to the battle feild. Not to mention the women that directly served the war efforts such as nursing.
These did not go unrecognized, and after WW1 the most women in Europe and North America had the right to vote, own property, etc.
During WW2 besides returning to the factories women did do military functions such as the Womens Army Air Corp the Womens Auxilliey, Womens Army Corp, etc. They flew aircraft, drove trucks, worked mostly in the logistics and supply areas, latter the were actully given some active roles such as aircraft that flew anti submarine patrols, and shuttling aircrafts across to the combat units.
Women also had and did a very valuable role in intellegence, there were women spies, women played a serious role in the resistance, and even any germany a very brave woman student tried to inform the german people of what was happening in german and her and her brother paid for this action with thier lives. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_rose
The world wars brought forward the modern roles of women, more women were able to join the work force and do jobs that were not traditionally for women. The womens movement was rapidly advanced by these tragic events.

The ones at home did their normal jobs as well as the jobs that the men used to do. They also gathered stuff and fundraised for the troops overseas.
Some women went overseas and worked as nurses, which meant they helped treat the wounded/sick soldiers and also cheered them up, cleaned (domestic stuff). They also transported the dead/wounded soldiers.
Only a few women were actually in the battle. Flora Sandes is an example.

World war one and two were major catalysts for change in western society. Women were given important jobs in factories , driving cars, as mechanics. all the jobs men did before they went to war and lots of jobs for the war effort to such as as translators or decoders . At the end of the second world war a lot of women didnt want to quit their jobs and return to the home full time. this paved the way for sixties feminism.

In World War One, the Hello Girls. The Hello Girls were called "combatants" in WWI -- the first Army women to be so-called because they served in France in response to General Pershing's emergency appeal for bilingual women telephone switchboard operators.
