They're known as The Home Counties: Kent, Surrey, Middlesex, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Essex. They are all the counties that surround the metropolitan area known as Greater London. It covers quite a large area!

The outskirts of London in the country are kind of outside London

The whole of greater London is quite countrified, so you could take your pick. It depends what side of London you are on, but there is usually some countryside within a short car or train journey.

I live on the South East side and so Kent is the nearest countryside. This has been described as the Garden of England!! You could try going to Sevenoaks say, and there are lots of other pretty towns. Some are near the sea too.

Hope this answers your question.

Learn English very quickly or you will find yourself lost and alone because nobody outside London will understand your garbled patois.

Get a map, find London and identify a ring-road called the M25. Inside of that is generally considered to be Greater London (dear other answerers- I know that there are exceptions but I'm writing this for an apparently Simple person).

Outside of the M25 is outside London. we call it England. If you further you find a mountainous little country called Wales. It's nice there but they won't "kinda understand you". Go a long way north and you may find Scotland.

Parts of the following London boroughs have sections that could be described as in/near 'the country':

Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Sutton, Kingston, Richmond, Hounslow, Hillingdon, Harrow, Barnet, Enfield, Waltham Forest, Redbridge and Havering.

If you look at their websites they often tell you which bits they consider countryside as they are protected from development by green belt laws. Large sections of these boroughs will also be built upon.

Hello,
I apologise for my fellow countryfolks rude remarks concerning your query, there are some really wonderful countryside places outside London, Epping Forest has some nice places in it, and there are bus and train services to the Forest, almost anywhere in Kent is beautiful for visitors but you really do need to be at least 10 miles away from central London.
there are theme parks too, try to obtain local entertainment information leaflets, this will give you plenty of wonderful days out to enjoy, I hope your visit is filled with lovely countryside, and please enjoy every moment of it, oh, and please remember, there are many parks, with there own attractions for you, close to Central London for you to see too, as well as the other attractions, try an open top bus trip, you can get ON and OFF those anywhere you please. Bye, Tony M
