Depending on where you live you can find someone through the electoral/voting lists- this is the case in Australia. You may be able to do it online, but I did it in person at the electoral office. This was a few years ago so Im not sure if the laws have changed. Private dectectives can be expensive. They charge between $50-150 hour plus expensives. But this will vary between detectives. Good luck

I, too, am in the process of finding some old classmates/friends, but to no avail so far. However, I have found several of some other old classmates/friends by using classmates.com, intelius.com (but you have to pay for background checks and personal stuff like that, which I never did), and even myspace.com. I have a myspace account, but I am not sure if you have to have one in order to search for someone on there. These are just a few ways that I have used to look for people I have lost contact with over the years and have found some of them, but not all of them. I hope that helps. Good luck in finding your friend. I hope you find him.

Start with MySpace.....I have had 3 people look me up in the last 2 months on there.....Guys are easier to find there then girls....Last names on girls change more often then guys.

Also use their other features to narrow the search.....your high school for instance

I've been successful with www.zabasearch.com If you narrow down the year of birth and state you will get information that may allow you to send a letter to his parents or relatives.
GOOD LUCK!!!
