While the surrounding habitat provides limits as to the shape crystals can attain, their overall shape is governed by their crystal structure, which is basically the patterns that the molecules that make them up form. It's their unique combinations of elements and the way that these elements combine together to form a crystal lattice that determine the overall crystal shape.
A good example of this is seen in calcite crystals vs. dolomite crystals.
Calcite's formula is CaCO3, and it classically forms a rhombohedrom. Dolomite has partial substituion of manesium for some of the calcite, and the different sized magnesium causes dolomite crystals to have a curved face due to imprefect substitutions.

you no they grow in a rock and deep with in as they grow in a diffrent shape of form its like a ball and it in the middle of the rock diffrent soils and water in the earth just god making healing thing s for the human life to learn what they really mean get to diffrent pretty rocks that maybe see some where and it was for display but them together but not touching and pul;l them a part back and forth with out touching and you will fell what i saying

The atomic structure of the mineral determines shape, when these are layered upon each other during crystal growth they form the shapes that we are used to, i.e. hexagon(quartz), dodecahedron(diamonds), etc.

I think that would be the cavities or cracks in which they grow,they take the shape of wherever they grow
