I think it is simply a dirty contact problem ....... they are very sensitive and the slightest soiling will cause a data transfer problem. Take out the sim card and clean the contacts, both in the phone and on the card, with a hint of surgical spirit dabbed on a cotton bud and then wipe and dry clean with a clean bud. Do this a few times ..... see if that solves it!

If you are sure the sim card is in properly then the sim card is more then likely bad. Sim cards go bad from time to time. You can test this by trying the sim card in another phone that you know works. If the sim card doesn't work in the other phone then your sim card is bad. If your sim card does work in another phone and that phone's sim card doesn't work in your phone then you have a bad phone. All this depends on if you have put the sim card in the phone in correctly in the first place. Also dont touch the gold foil on the sim card. Sim cards that are in phones all the time do not need to be cleaned.

What make is it?

I have a sony ericsson and sometimes it does that to me... In my phone, it has the tendency to slide outwards by even a few millimetres, which can cause the "Insert SIM" message...

I suggest you try and clean it, re-insert it and try switching the phone on and off several times.

Hope that helps
;)

Try cleaning the simcard chip and the contact where the simcard sits. Make sure that the simcard is inserted properly. It also could be that the simcard may need registering if its a payg.

Try taking sim card out, clean copper contacts carefully, then reinsert. Copper corodes, so you might not have a good contact. Good luck.
