I have a couple of male friends who only really communicate on a functional level over the phone or via text ie do you want to go to the pub and messages of that nature. However conversations are more open and free flowing, face to face. Is this normal for straight male friends to behave in this way and would you say their really proper friends?

Im a straight single female and both parties including myself know that we are platonic friends (they both like other women and I don't fancy either of them). One of them has a girlfriend (who knows we are friends and has met me) so I expect communication to be less on his part. I have never had a boyfriend or been on a proper date so my experience is limited when it comes to understanding male behaviour (I am in my mid twenties)

A male perspective would be good.

I'm 43 and frankly haven't come on to far in the male friends experience. I don't actually believe you can be friends with men in the same way as you can with women. I have a husband and he's my best friend. I have my two boys and they come in as friends as well. But I don't think it's really possible outside of those relationships unless they are totally out of age range,,, ummm and that excludes the older ones lol

Also I am a right old minger so what does that mean? I still don't think you can be at ease with men like you can with women.

I don't talk well on the phone....In fact I hate making phone calls, yet I text like a madman....I feel more comfortable texting. I am married and have quite a few female friends, but i try to avoid talking to anyone on the phone. The only person that I have ever been able to talk on the phone with for any duration has been my wife. On the same page with them however I can hold up my end of a conversation face to face. Its just how I am wired. As for the headline "Acceptable" can only be defined by those parties involved. Specifically, if his female interest (girlfriend, wife, etc.) and you are okay with him acting the way he does then it is "acceptable". If him, his girl, and you all didn't care it would be "acceptable" for the 3 of you to have sex. Now if we were talking about having sex in a pub then "acceptable" would also have to be defined by all the patrons of that pub that are or would be present during the act.

it's normal. I have a few friends that I speak on the telephone for longer than 5 minutes at a time, but most times it's just "see ya when I see ya" or "be there in 20 minutes"

No such thing as a platonic relationship. The guy is friends with you in the hope that he can 'get some' one day.
