If you are in the UK, the grounds include non-consummation and the other party having a family history of mental illness. This last applied to my stepfather's first marriage - his wife's family had deliberately hushed it up for fear that he wouldn't marry her. When he found out, he simply had the marriage annulled.

I also know someone who married a Russian against the advice of all her friends. It turned out he had only married her for her passport and she found out later that he was probably gay in any case. Because she loved him, she kept hanging on, hoping things would somehow magically come out right, but in the end, four years later, she felt ready and filed a petition for nullity. The Russian filed his Acknowledgement of Service admitting that the marriage had never been consummated, and in spite of her solicitor swearing blind that the judge would never believe her and would never grant a nullity decree, he did.

You should go and see a solicitor for some advice - annulments are quite rare and they find it quite interesting to do one, as a change from the run of the mill divorce. In your local Yellow Pages, find a solicitor that does either a fixed fee interview or a free initial half hour consultation. Make sure the secretary clearly understands the meeting is on this basis (if the solicitor offers it) otherwise you will get billed at his normal charge out rate.

There is a family lawyer on here and hopefully he will see your question. It would be helpful though if you would allow people to e-mail you.

I am a london based lawyer and we are known and feared throughout by most husbands. If funds are tight, you can make an arrangement whereby you don't pay until the money is sorted out, and pay us at the end from the proceeds.

Email us on law@hylton-potts.com or call tomorrow (Monday the 12th) 07074-763 639. Good luck whatevert you decide.
