Carnival in February is 'Mardi Gras', or the festival of Shrove Tuesday before the start of Lent. Apart from making pancakes, that day is not that much observed in the UK. The Notting Hill Carnival is nothing to do with religion, but was started as a celebration of West Indian culture in the UK. It is held sensibly on the weekend of a public holiday at the end of summer, rather than on a weekday which is not a holiday in the middle of winter.
