you should be able to burn CDs also

Yes, of course. Look at the DVD-rw as an updated/upgraded version of the normal disk drives.

It's just like a DVD Player that you use for your TV, it can play VCDs too, right? same applies to your dvd-rw.

I noticed you wrote Dvd-rw, not the usual Dvd-rom. It is for burning. You can use it to burn CDs, DVDs, VCDs, anything..
