we have all seen it in a film where someone gets hit on the back of the head with the butt of a pistol and they get knocked out, a few minites later they come round with no apparent side effects.

I have never been pistol whipped or pistol whipped anyone but i would have thought that you would have to hit someone quite hard to knock them out and at the very least you would cut the head open, maybe even fracture the skull or possibly cause brain damage.

well I have just the story for you...
Seven months ago a good friend of mine was in fact pistol whipped by strangers for what reason no one knows,. Anyways he remembers 3 or 4 people and the gun and remembers being hit with it the first time.. When he woke he was lying on the ground in a huge puddle of blood (later he had to have almost 4 pints of blood ).. He had a severe gash, well lets call it an opening so big that he had 19 staples holding his skull from slipping taking half his ear with him.... Swelling , fluid on the brain, etc.... So yes it could do serious damage as well as kill you not only from the blow but the other injuries that go along with it.

My friend died several ..months later from pre-existing conditions that came back due to the pistol whipping he had received.........

The seriousness of the injury would depend on one or two things.
1. How big the pistol was
2. How hard you were hit
3. The amount of times you were hit
4. the area of the skull where the pistol made contact

Damn right. But films are make believe. Nobody ever just tucks up into a ball and starts screaming in pain, like when I seen someone get hit with the butt of a shotgun. It was an accident at clay pigeon shooting, where the victim bent down as someone lifting the gun turned round into him! He needed some staples in his head, but he never lost consciousness. To be honest, I think the screaming was more about shock than pain, but it must have really hurt!
You're right, hitting someone hard enough to knock them out with a piece of metal, would really cause some damage.

I really wouldn't think it would do you much good to be crashed on the head with any part of a pistol but, of course, in the film world they can get up even after they've been through an industrial shredder!

when you use a pistol/gun to beat or hit with. Usually its the bunt of the pistol that is used. I think I'd rather be shot then whipped.

That all depends on the blow (because you are essentially being hit with a bulky chunk of metal. It could seriously damage your head / skull.

But whatever the case don't believe anything you see in a film (especially an American one).

Much violence portrayed on screen is absurd. People hit in the face and mouth get up with little damage if any.

Are you sure that you have never been pistol-whipped and lost your memory? It sounds to me that you might have.

yes - they'd probably be killed. A serious blow to the back of the head will kill a person
