Actually Johnny and Skip are both correct. In the U.S. are debit cards with a MasterCard or Visa symbol can work as a signature transaction and a pin transactions.

Signature transaction usually cost more and pin transactions are cheaper.

Signature transaction are carried over the MasterCard or Visa network.

Pin transactions are carried over the Nyce, Interlink, Star, Maestro, Pulse, Visa plus and Cirrus networks depending on what the merchant takes. However, those network have share agreements. So even if a merchant does not take a network, sometimes it will still go through.

You can take only atm/debit cards (Pin transactions) if you want or you can take both Credit cards and debit cards

In the USA I believe debit cards come at a fixed rate of between 25-50 cents per transaction. Depending on the rate for credit cards, some retailers prefer you to use credit. I used to do a debit transaction at my dry cleaners but they have just switched credit card processors and, for the amount of my bill, it is cheaper to use credit because the percentage take is less than the flat fee. I choose to do what is cheaper for my cleaners as Ilike them more than I like greedy, grasping credit card companies
