unfortunately they can in UK. If you are long term sick you are no longer able to fulfil your contract (ie do the job) so your contract is breached and they can terminate it.
Bigger companies tend not to do this for at least 6 months or a year, but smaller ones tend to do it quicker cos they cant cover for an absent employee and need someone there doing the job.
sorry but its what they do.

Hi Paddy,
In the UK, yes it is possible. It is called frustration of contract.
If your mother cannot any longer perform her duties under the contract of employment her employer can do this provided that there are no reasonable measures that can be taken to allow her to safely perform her job.
Many employers will look at alternative types of work within the company to enable the worker to continue working full time or change to part time working.
I hope your mum gets well soon and is feeling better.
Good luck.

Yes Paddy, the company can sack you after the SSP period has expired (12 months). They have to be seen to be making enquiries about how much longer the employee will be off and if s/he will need more time off after returning to work.
If your Mum is offered a redundancy package, that is quite generous.
Good luck to your Mum...I hope she gets well. You can always ask the CAB....it's free. Best wishes...xx

Depends which country you come from, In Australia they can't sack you for having personal time off as long as you have back up from your doctor and certificates stating you are having chemo they can't do a thing otherwise you can take them to court for unfair dismissal and discrimination against a person who is ill.

Unfortunately they can after so many absences. Tell your mother to look into FMLA, this will allow her so much medical leave without threat of being fired.
