I moved in here a year ago and the previous tenant was a chain smoker and had a dog which used inside the house as its toilet! The windows are old and could not be opened even by me, a younger person. I cleaned with bleach and redecorated the whole place and opened windows whenever possible but it STILL SMELLS ! Any advice please.

By the way, it is a tiled floor which I bleached thoroughly a few days before having new carpets fitted throughout the flat. The windows are mentioned because no fresh air ever could have entered the place unless the front door was opened. This is sheltered accommodation for the elderly.

Move because your landlord doesn't care. There was a guy living in an apartment above me back in Sydney and he used to toss his ash in his cupboard under his sink, drop food scraps on the floors and never pick them up and he had little brown roaches on his walls in the day time. You would look at a roach and it would wink back at you. His apartment was fumigated after he moved. Yours should have been too by the look of things.

Ah, I've been down that road before... it sucks and I'm sorry you're having to go through it, too.

A house we lived in at one point had been rented previously to a man who had two dogs, one of which gave birth to six puppies. So there were eight dogs now living in this one small house. Unfortunately, they used all sections of the house as a toilet. The smell was rampant and despite all efforts to remove the smell that lingered long after he moved out, we had to replace the carpet.

The repugnant smells were trapped within the carpet fibers and had seeped into the wood below. Using a commercial grade carpet cleaner will not be able to help in this situation, you'll need to replace the flooring. However, you may not need to replace the wood flooring under your carpet. Once the carpet is pulled up, look for massive stains on the wood flooring. If there are none, great! If there are minor to moderate stains, then you should be able to just treat the floor by cleaning it and sprinkling pure baking soda on the floor (let the baking soda sit for at least a day before vacuuming it all up). Then seal it using a wood sealer and then finally replace the area with new carpet.

I feel for you, I really do. I wish you all the best in ridding yourself of the odors!

It is probably in the floor. What type of flooring do you have? If you have hardwood floors, then the dog pee probably got absorbed by the wood, like a sponge. Did you remove all the carpeting? That could be a source. Another thing you could try is to call an industrial cleaner. They have experience with situations like this and they do cleanups after fires, getting rid the smoke smell from fire damage, I'm sure they could get rid of a heavy smoker smell. I have no idea what the cost is for thier services, but maybe you could get a free estimate.

A black-light will reveal the location of urine and other funky residue. Buy a black light, plug it in and prepare to be grossed out.

To absorb odors, try trays baking soda or kitty litter.

I don't get the no open window thing. What does that have to do with smoking or a dog? Unless the dog peed on the window while smoking, I don't see what one thing has to do with another.

Call the landlord and tell him you are paying for windows that open. He should fix them.

you say this is sheltered accomodation but not who owns it.Get in touch with landlord and ask them to repair windows as this could affect your safety if the emergency services needed to get in or you get out. Also try your local council enviromental health department even if it is a council flat they can often assist.

This is going to sound strange, but you could have a bean in your nose. If you have a small child that could have put a bean in your nose while you where sleeping that could be the problem. Another way a bean could have gotten into your nose is if you vomited recently after eating a dish that had beans in it. Consult your doctor, he will be able to easily find out if that is your problem.

try using something which absorbs smell, like dry soda ( which we use in cooking) place soda in some bowls in your room and see what happens . repeat this for few days. once the smell is gone you can use room freshners also.

Check under the floorboards, maybe they hid a corpse there which is now rotting.
