256kbs is a measurement of the smallest data unti - a bit. So theoreticall your throughput should 256 divided 8 bits/byte. That is the pure # of bits that can be transmitted per second. Part of the transmission however contains instructions or info about the remaining data. Usually you will see at least 20% if not more used for other reasons. You should expect high 20's kBps or about 160 kbits. You may see spikes higher than not but not often.
As far as the idea that your distance from the telco will affect it, that is true butthe further away you arethe lower spees they offer.

Maximum download speed you can expect from 256 kbps is - well, 256 kbps.
But the real speed depends on many other factors as someone mentioned above. Depending of what kind of broadband u have-cable or dsl, it can be much less than stated, Especially if u have cable, as it is shared among many users.
The other important thing is that 256 kbps speed means 256 kiloBITS per second, while when u download data to your PC the speed will be reported in kiloBYTES per second. That is, ISP's 256 kbps means 32 kiloBytes of data per second.
Take away a few more Kbps of protocol data, you end up with less than 30 KB of your favorite movie per second. (and don't forget, this is theoretical maximum)

Hi You internet speed is already optimal. If you want to increase some more, you need to check whether windows update is enabled or antivirus update is being downloaded or any other application like chat messenger, browsing etc is open. Close all applications except your torrent app. You may get slight difference. Note :- 256 kbps is too small bandwidth to download moviews etc. It was be used only for browsing. Better go for 2048 kbps data plans.

256 kbps(kilobits per second) = 32 Kbps(Kilobytes per second).
So u can expect to get the speed of 32 KB/Sec

There are several factors to answering this question.
It depends how far away from the phone exchange you are, who your ISP is, where they are based.
In short, we can give you no real answer.
