Most people of my generation learn this from the cradle.
Not detergent, not Windolene,Windex or any other expensive rubbish. Clean, warm water and a liberal amount of vinegar applied with a soft clean cloth. Pay particular attention to cleaning out the corners and working from top to bottom. Dry with scrunched - up newspaper ( the Financial Times is my favourite), applying the same technique as the wash.
Don't forget to recycle your used FT.

I gave up on Windex a long time ago ! I also don't use vinegar, it really doesn't do anything. And forget newspapers, they make a mess. Get a bucket, fill it half full of HOT water, and add a small amount of amonia, scrub your windows with this solution, then, use a squeegee, and finish with an old T'shirt or towel

buy a squeegee with a sponge on like you get for car windows .Fill a bucket with hot water and squirt in a squirt of washing up liquid, froth it up. soak the sponge side of the squeegee, squeeze and cover the window with the solution. Now wipe the rubber squeegee blade with a damp towel and starting at the top of the window draw the rubber blade to the side, then back again moving down to and fro until the bottom.Wipe the blade again. Move to next window and repeat.
Wipe round frame when finished.

I am in the cleaning business and here is our secret!
We buy this cleaning cloth off the internet. You have to buy in packages of 5 but they are only like $3 bucks a piece. I have ordered them and use them on everything, especially cleaning windows and clean mirrors. They are made out of tiny fibers. They are guaranteed not to scratch and all you do is rinse the cloth under water, wring it out and wipe ANY surface with no streaks or scratch. Use em over and over. I have not thrown one away yet!
I am sold on this ...I encourage you to try it out….hope this helps…Steve

I use the stuff we buy for the car windsreen - - screen washer stuff - - - diluted in an old spray bottle. Just wipe the windows clean after spraying, using a good lot of elbow grease and some good make kitchen roll.

use your normal window spray but don't use a cloth use newspaper once newspaper starts to get bit soggy go over it with a clean piece keeps going around in circular motion you will be amazed at how sparkly and smear/streak free they will come out trust me on this it really works the cloths always leave streaks and smear but newspaper actually works also works fantastic on mirrors too

Best way to clean windows......newspaper and vinegar.
Put vinegar on your windows with newspaper, then use a dry piece of newspaper folded neatly and rub the vinegar off from top to bottom....no smears and gleaming windows.
