I totally agree with you, when I was a kid I used to be very good with spellings and now I don't even bother cause spell check is there to correct us.........but sometimes you tend to make blunders..........like for example once replying to one of my business clients, instead of writing " Regret the inconvenience caused" I wrote " Regret the incontinence caused". I just wrote in a haste and ran through the spell check which corrected the words for spelling and obviously I spelled inconvenience incorrectly so it corrected it to incontinence. later I was so damn upset and now I double check on what I write.

You know, I have the same gripe. I often marvel at how people just cannot spell. I only did year 12, but have always prided myself on being a good speller. So many people use the wrong words! For example: I can here (hear) you talking, OR There (they're) playing cards. My sister in law pronounces her 'th's' as 'f's eg: Fank You. It makes me want to slap her! Now her kids are copying her! Shame, shame. I don't know what it is. I guess poorly educated and lazy are closely related, but I didn't receive a great education. However my grammar is 'usually' correct and I can spell just about anything. I guess I just have more pride in myself and don't want to be thought of as an idiot. Most people don't care.

I do slightly object to the 'no one on here can spell correctly', for I, for one, pride myself on my spelling and you should not make sweeping generalisations. I do agree, however, that there is a lot of bad spelling, and punctuation. Can I suggest several reasons:-

1. Not everyone is a trained typist and typos are easy to make. I agree, however, that the spell check should take care of that, but it isn't infallible. For some reason, and some times, it doesn't know the word 'the'.

2. Spellings do vary from country to country. I'm English and spell words like 'generalisation' with a s - which is normal for me. My browser is Mozilla which spell checks as I go along and it is always telling me that spelling is incorrect, as it is American and wants me to spell it with a 'z'. Likewise it doesn't want me putting a final 'me' on programme when I am writing about something on TV, as opposed to a computer application.

3. Mobile phone texting. So many young 'uns write everything as if they were sending a SMS. One understands why words are shortened on that system, but it should not be carried into other forms of communications.

4. Appalling teaching standards. Here in the UK for quite a while it was believed you should not correct a child's bad spelling, punctuation or grammar as it would stunt the poor little dears' growth. Utter poppycock. It is important to be able to communicate effectively and clearly. Many employers here find they have to train new, young employees in writing, etc. That should not have to happen. The schools are clearly failing us.

I've been wondering the same thing. People worry so much about the way they look, but not about they way they speak or write. Bad grammar and typos are like having spinach in your teeth. You wouldn't go on a job interview like that, would you? What about a date?

Having interviewed thousands and hired hundreds of people over the past 20 years, I'm amazed at how few people realize that they can set themselves apart from the rest of their competition simply by having polished communication skills. It's a huge competitive advantage in the current job market.

We're not going to be able to compete against people from other countries who value the English language more than we do...

Laziness may be a fine excuse when you know your audience truly doesn't care, but on public forums like this, writers should care more, not less.

Well, I think the Internet has made some lousy spellers lazy. When I was growing up, the Internet did no exist. All we had were libraries, encyclopedias, dictionaries and real books. People these days depend too much on the world wide web and miss out on the rewards of real learning.

Personally, I think it’s a lack of personal drive to learn and better yourself and counting too much on spell check. LAZINESS!!!
