Nations nor businesses can stop piracy. Its technologically impossible. If a human eye can see it and a human ear can hear it, it can be copied.

However, there are many ways to create incentives to avoid piracy - laws like the DCMA, lawsuits like the RIAA suing their own target audience.

These things don't work very well, but that was the intent - to protect a business model.

The entire thing is kind of ridiculous once you really get into the details but that's how it is these days. Its not a technological problem - its a social problem and there will always be social problems.

Lowering prices, musicians publishing their music directly to the customer (this happens on many band sites), video being made at home rather than in huge hollywood studios (youtube anyone?)

Basically, the social problem is the fact that society doesn't need a middleman reaping profits while the law of the land is basically trying to legislate an outdated business model.

It would be like bow and arrow manufacturers suing and winning against gun manufacturers and gun customers for putting them out of business with better technology.

This kind of thing is nothing new however - buggy whip makers used a similar argument when the automobile came about. Music performers used a similar argument when the player piano was invented, same with radio. Sony betamax was sued and won over a similar argument years ago. Regardless, the tech kept rolling along oblivious and immune to the concerns of obsolescent business models and without fear of the law.

Stop charging $18.99 for a CD. They should stop production of CD's and keep everything on the internet. That way, the price of their album goes down because they don't have to manufacture thousands upon thousands of CD's.
