The domain is the range of numbers that it is legal to put as values of x.

for example, f(x) = x^2 has a domain of all real numbers or (-inf, inf)

whereas g(x) = 1 / (x-2) has a domain of all real numbers excluding x=2

and h(x) = sqrt(x) has a domain of (0,inf) ie all positive numbers. (that is if you want the results to be real in the range).

The shortcut would be to peek over at the smart kid's paper that sits across from you.
