In a personal computer, a hard disk drive (HDD) is the mechanism that controls the positioning, reading, and writing of the hard disk, which furnishes the largest amount of data storage for the PC. Although the hard disk drive (often shortened to "hard drive") and the hard disk are not the same thing, they are packaged as a unit and so either term is sometimes used to refer to the whole unit.

The major manufacturers are Maxtor and Seagate.

Simply, it's a small metal box, that has spinning metal platters inside. They hold information magnetically.

The important role? They hold data even when they are powered off!

So we install Windows to the drive on almost all PC's, install programs, and keep letters, email, and data there. When we power up, everything is still there (in a perfect world).

Some day, we might turn on the PC the size of a fig newton, and it will get all the stuff we need from a network at work, or perhaps the internet. I see this as far off, but it could happen.
