After I moved into my College's dorms, I noticed that I started getting sick more frequently than usual. So to try and ward off illnesses I started taking the Airborne dietary supplement regularly. I noticed that I seemed to get sick less, and for shorter periods of time when taking it.

I usually take one dose per day (two or three when I'm sick) to try and keep myself healthy. But I've heard some people say that taking this product over a long period of time could be harmful. Is that true? And if so, what is a safe way I could take it, or an alternative to it?

The bicarbonate soda in Airborne (what makes it fizzy) neutralizes the acid in your stomach, (like an Alka-seltzer) That can affect how your food digests. You really shouldn't take it that regularly, it's best to try to keep your immune system strong with a healthy diet, a vitamin supplement, get plenty of rest and exercise, wash your hands often. I only take Airborne when I first feel like I'm getting sick or if I've been around a lot of sick people in the office or sick friends/family.

Here is some information you may find helpful .

Also, when I first started to work as a teacher I got sick a lot. Some of it may be a change of environment or the more frequent exposure than what your immune system may be use to. It could also be more allergy related versus the normal cold. As others have said, good diet, basic daily vitamins are a great help. I would also use germx a bit more regularly and washing your hands more. I would also recommend giving your dorm a solid clean now and then at least once a month. You could be experiencing left over germs and bugs from your room's previous occupants. If you not someone who usually exercises I would recommend you incorporate some. Nothing too extreme or you'll make things work. Just enough to help build up energy levels, stamina, and a strong body. Given that it is more recent I would say it's more environmentally and exposure based. Keep in mind weather too if you've moved to another state.

In my experience the Airborne product has been very effective. It is best to use it only when you feel the first symptoms of a cold coming on. Then use it every three to four hours for a couple days. Over the long term, try to improve your immune system by improving your diet. Eliminate processed, fatty, fried, and fast foods. Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables...the less preservatives and the more choices you can make for organic produce the better.

If you are beginning to feel the symptoms of flu try the homeopathic remedy oscillococcinum by Boiron.
