i liked the Sherlock Holmes version, so many details that were cool about being done right in the movie, many of the old Hollywood scenes were on studios movie lots and were still there in the 1950 time that i saw the industry

Many of the effects were taken directly from the stage show: the dilapidated chandelier raising at the beginning, the chandelier later crashing down, the Phantom appearing in the mirror and Christine walking through it, the candlabras rising from the water in the Phantom's lair, etc.

The film was able to change things a bit, for example as the chandelier rises the decrepit theater is restored to its original appearance. Also, note the difference between Christine and the Phantom's descent into the depths and later Raul's descent. Christine saw things through the eyes of illusion and over-romanticized the journey. Raul saw things for what they were. That is also the explanation for the difference in appearance of the Phantom: Christine removes his mask and there's hardly a scar visible, then later after she has fallen in love with Raul she removes the Phantom's mask during the Don Giovanni sequence and the Phantom is horribly scarred.

I really think you should just rent it. It's actually a pretty complicated story and the questions you're asking would best be answered if you take time to see it. I know it might seem daunting but that's the best way to answer your own questions. It's hard in this forum to give you the specificity you're looking for. Good luck.
