The pretty shiny stuff is wonderous. The gold is precious gift of some forgotten god that left it when the 3rd celestial bowling tournament to decide the third question was postponed.
It is as important to a thirsty human at sea as it weighs when thrown over the side to make room for rainwater.

Not so important. Gold was chosen 'arbitrarily' as a means of payment, it doesn't have any exceptional characteristic. If they hadn't choose gold, they would have chosen some other metal.
