I think Colombia, Mexico and Cuba have national dances.
Columbia has the Cumbia.
Mexico has the Passo Doble
Cuba has Salsa or Folkloric Son.
Steps: Cumbia is back breaks
Cuba's Salsa: combination of Back breaks, side breaks and lots of arm twisting movements

Well, when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's, I'd say that square dancing was considered to be as close to the official national dance as you could get, since it was included as part of the physical education curriculum of schools across the country. Even today, I believe that square dancing is the most common form of dance that is taught in the schools.

there are no dances for the country BECAUSE the dances change in name and style with the fasion for that era..for example it would be
cake walk ( slaves would do )
and the waltz
then in the following years as fasion changes the lindesy,
fox trot,and the charleston.
then the twist, the shag, the patti duke, mashed potatoe
then the hustle, the dirty dog, the bump.-70's
then its the smurf, the running man the robot electric slide -80's
then the macarena and so on...
now its the krumpin clowning, the spongebob, the cript walk and buck'n.
get it?

There really is no national dance of America like folk dances of European countries. Country square dancing has roots in AMerica. Aboriginal Americans have their ceremonial dances but nothing official.

The 15 minute shuffle.costume:whatever's popular at the moment.music:see costumes.
Actual dance moves:doesn't really matter as nobody will remember it for long, until VH1 does a special about it and then everyone will be filled with nostalgia for it.

Remeber that America refers to the whole Continent, it is a little bit difficult to have continental dance, having so much diversity, don't you think?

There aren't any.
But ones that are crucial to the American heritage are the electric slide, YMCA, and mocerena.
