RAM is Random Acces Memory.
Its the cheapest way to give your pc the best performance boost.
There are several types of ram
SD Ram (Mainly used in Pentium3,Athalons,Early Pentium 4's)
DDR Ram (Used in Pentium 4's 2001 forwards)
DDR2 (Used in Most PC;s with a new CPU and motherboard)
A PC only supports one kind of ram most of the time to find out what ram you are running now download the program called CPUZ add to your question and I will explain futher.
That means you should go and buy DDR ram ddr ram isnt too much ask your local computer store or go to crucial.com and check out sizes and prices in todays computer the best amount would be 1024mb of ram so if you have 512mb now just add another 512mb or if you have 256mb add 1x256mb and another 512mb.

RAM is Random Access Memory. You can write information to it, but it is temporary.

RAM type is not very important for generic office productivity use. You're not going to see much improvement with faster timing or anything. More importantly, be sure it is the right type for the system. Use a tool like Crucial's to find out. http://www.crucial.com/
