Which is smarter, a dog or a horse?

Or could it be that they each have their own special abilities, neither could definitively be considered "smarter."

I don't think either could be decided as 'smarter' then the other. I haven't much experience in training dogs, besides my single dog I own, but horses can be trained to do things so quickly and easily! Most people would probably say dogs, but horses have a LOT of wits about them too. Around 4pm everyday my horses both know to be waiting for me at the gate for me to catch, like clock work. They know my voice from others, heck, in competition sides of things, some horses know how to judge a fence better then the rider. Many cheeky ponies have been made known to escape their paddock and even bolted stalls. Western trained horses know how to round up cattle as well as dogs do. I think it'd be pretty equal...

I would think a dog. I hear so many stories about how dogs save their owners from fires and the like. Plus a dog can be trained to do various jobs like sniff for drugs. I doubt a horse can be trained to do many tasks like that.

There is no doubt here, a dog is smarter. Horses are much more instinctive animals.
