I was just wondering if it makes any sence to anyone why it's $1,000.00 fine for littering and only a $250.00 fine for running a red light.I live in Bay Area,California and here red light runners are an epidemic. When the light turns green we have to wait for at least 3 or 4 cars to clear the intersection before we can go.Also when I stop as the light turns yellow I run the risk of being rear ended by someone who wants to run the light.By the way this has already happened to me and the guy said it was my fault because eventhough the light was red he said there weren't any cars comming.Shouldn't the penalty for running a red light at least cost as much as littering? How can we change the law to make it cost more for red light offenders? It is really, really bad here and something has to be done about it.Any suggestions?

the traffic law on running over red lights came earlier and at that time 250 dollars is reasonable. yet the anti-littering campaign which also came early yet most of the time ignored, that's why most of the city councils ordained laws making the penalty heavier...therefore, the traffic laws' penalties needed to be reviewed again. write a letter to a city council officer or better go to their offices, then the likelihood is that they will make a resolution that will be submitted for review and proper action on the list agenda of your local government.

Research has to be done! To see how many actually violaters there are driving through red lights. Politicians will normally will listen if there are facts to back up changes. This facts should also take into account the number of accidents incurred because people where stopped at a red light and the driver behind them want to drive through.
Once your armed with facts. Then make an appointment to talk to someone in city hall, to discuss change in the policies. Make sure inform them that it would be preventing accidents. etc. Furthermore if they rise fine amount the city will be taking in more profits etc. When the benefits work out for public safety and the city sees more revenue dollars you will have a win win situation.

Good point. Keep writing your representatives, and use this example. If you can dig up some numbers about the number of traffic accidents due to running red lights (ask at your local library for help), that may also support what you're saying.
