What we call 'constellation' are geometric or animal-human like figures delimited by ancient people about 6000 years ago. The first known contellations were designed by sumerians in 3800 bC.
It's curious to see how the same contellations have come to our times with almost no changes.
Actually those figures are just assigned to the bidimensional view, infact many of the stars of the same constellation are placed lightyears from one-another and are in no way related to eachothers.

Shepherds had too much time on their hands at night. This gave them plenty of time to imagine that groups of stars looked like animals or things. (Just my conjecture.)
