Apparently in Aztec society war served a dual function..for conquest and subjugation and also as a way of providing sacrificial victims for religious rites.
Obviously the function of notable and distinguished warriors who had proved their prowess by their ferocity in battle and had taken many captives was to instruct the next generation of warriors among the up and coming Aztec youth.
Although Aztec society was extremely proscribed and restrictive (eg death penalty for adultery and drunkedness), it seems at least by looking at the pre-conquest codices that in the case of 'senior citizen' Aztecs, these rules were relaxed and free consumption of pulche and fornication was permitted.
