I am trying to move mp4 files shot with sony digi cam onto my 5th gen ipod (1.2.1). The files play in itunes 7.0.2, but when I sync to the ipod, I get the message "...video format is not supported by the ipod "name of ipod". This does not happen with mp4 movies ripped with handbrake.

.mp4 videos are the same as .avi videos. The extension (.mp4) is just a generic VIDEO identifier. It could be one of dozens of popular formats masked under thant .mp4 name.

You might want to go to offical site of ipod to gewt a converter to take your mp4 and put it into a compatable version of .mp4

*its synching it because its simply looking at the extension, and saying Ok, we play this type. However upon opening that movie, they discover their decoder dont want to see the frames....

I don't remember what menu it's under, as I don't have iTunes, but there should be an option to "convert this video to iPod format". I believe it is accessed when you right-click on the file. Also, if you have QuickTime Pro, it will give you this option.

Edit: After a bit of searching of the Apple site, I found the tutorial. Click on the source link.

It's probably easiest to just download a file converter software and convert all the mp4 files into files that your iPod has played in previous times. I personally don't know any programs, but search "file converter" on google or any torrent site and you'll probably find something free.

Try using Videora (1) to convert the videos to the proper format, though others have said that there's a way to do it in iTunes (which I don't use).

iPods simply don't support quite a few file types out there, so conversion is necessary.

feels like it has a copyright protection report in it. reason you are able to play it on itunes yet you cant on your ipod. that is because of it no longer being waiting to authorize on your ipod. the guy who made this needed it specifically to bypass on your itunes.
