Why and how could people have killed off some a spectacular animal? It was the only species of parrot native to the U.S. It's not even an animal very suitable for eating.

Personally this is the first time I've heard of a Carolina Parakeet and sad to hear it is extinct :, (

Birds in general are dieing out because they are being killed for feathers, food in rural areas, killed to protect crops and most parrots are captured to be sold on black markets which then they are killed because of bad living conditions...

THE CAROLINA PARROT.
[Carolina Parakeet. EXTINCT.]
Genus CENTURUS CAROLINENSIS, Linn.
[Conuropsis carolinensis.]

The reasons given are that it was a pest and that the feathers were used in decorating ladies hats. Usually destruction of habitat and or a catastrophic disease are reasons the species is finished off. The population gets so low that a viral infection kills the remaining mature birds.

they didn't kill them off on purpose (im sure a few got shot for food and/or feathers), humans cut down forests and they die off. Much like the dodo bird, but they only lasted 8 years after man discoverd them. Humans destroy natural habitats everyday to pave way for our rising population. Kinda seems that we play on the wrong team sometimes!

They killed them for their feathers and to keep the parakeets from eating their crops.
