They are ALT codes heres a list of them

you can go to special characters in Microsoft Word or Works and find that "e". Once you find it, there is a special place where you can set a quick key for that key. For example, Alt-5...or something. Then whenever you need to use that e with an accent, you have a quick way of doing it (in the above instance, by pressing Alt-5 if that's what you choose. This is really helpful if you are taking Spanish or some other foreign language which have these accents that English doesn't.

if ur in Microsoft word, or a lot of other programs. Hold down alt and then type 138.

Also Word has a list of symbols you can choose from. Its in the insert menu

Don't bother with those silly ALT+ ASCII codes unless you know them by heart..try out AllChars at
http://allchars.zwolnet.com/ its a lovely little program that has most of the symbols you would need and its very easy to use.
for the character you want you just need to press
Ctrl then e then '
very simple.

Its an accent, and it depends on your computer, and how fonts are managed on it. I use a Mac, and for the accent, just type option e, then e again, and it will be there. It might not print correctly at a printer though. Thats a whole 'nuther can-o-worms... ; )

In what application? In a wordprocessor, go to insert -> special character - or something similar. In HTML - there are several sites that will tell you how to code foreign characters.
