I also saw Zinedine Zidane wearing lots of tape on his hands during the 2006 World Cup final. I thought that maybe he had an injury until he started taking it off as he left the field (...also, why would he have it on BOTH hands?). Maybe it's for injury prevention ...or maybe it gives players a better grip on the ball when they throw it in from the sidelines (or a better grip on other players' uniforms...if this is the case, the Italians really need some tape lol) Maybe it's just a French thing. :-) Allez les Bleus!!

The white band is put around jewelry to prevent any accidents happening, like a ring getting in the net of the goal. You will notice this mostly with married players ( like Henry, Bergkamp always use to wear this ), I've even noticed a player or two having the same white tape over their ear lobe

Im not sure who thierry henry is but if he plays baseball and is a catcher its so the pitchers can see his fingers and the signs better... otherwis any other sport and its probably just so a player doesnt injure that finger more

it's usually that the player had a prior injury, probably by falling an twisting a finger during a game or practice.
so to prevent further damage, they tape the joint so that if he falls again during a match, the fall would have a lesser effect on that particular part.

i don't know much a bout it. but i think in some matches players should not have jewelry like rings so they can cover them with this white band.

I don't play/watch soccer, but in football it is common to tape your knuckles with white adhesive tape...helps to keep them from dislocating, or just injuring a tendon when they inevitably get twisted/yanked/jammed..
