They aren't painful but that varies for wach woman. I noticed mine when I would go to the bathroom and I would cramp everytime I went. The cramps felt like the cramps you have when you have diarrhea. Then as time progressed my contractions went from the front to the back but hardly any pain. After I got to the hospital and had dialated to 5cm I couldn't take it any more. I was having nothing but back labor and I got an epidural.

Mine started out like the cramps I'd get for my period and then went to sever back pains.
I had 5 children.

At first I thought Ive got backache for about 10 hours and then it changed .It became more regullar and more painful for 8 houres.Ididnt give any local anesthesia and it wasnt intolerable.

Mine felt like back pain that just kinda tingled my stomach. Different for everyone I guess!

They feel like strong menstual cramps. They become more and more painful as labor progresses.

Mine felt like very bad intestinal cramps that got stronger and stronger. (upset stomach pains)

If they induce your labor they start out hard and fast and continue to get worse.

my first baby they were like menstural cramps, the last two were more like intestinal cramps, I thought I had upset tummy.
