If you are distinguishing between the effects of alcoholism and illicit drug abuse, you would first have to look at the effects of the drug laws. There are far more alcoholics than illicit drug addicts in this country. As long as illicit drug addiction continues to be treated as criminal problem instead of a disease, the effects on the economy will continue to be severely detrimental. The annual per prisoner expenditures for non-violent drug offenders are enormous, with little or no societal benefit in return. The billions spent by the DEA don't make a dent in the flow of drugs.

Drug abuse doesn't take people out of the workforce, the inability to find work after paying your debt to society does that.

Hmmm, the complete breakdown of the human persona left in the workforce to keep the nation running.......stay off the drugs, .....drugs are bad mmmkay....
