Anna Karenina. It has an economy of language and a vividness of action. You get to know the characters so well that if they came to life you could spot them on the street. It's consistently fascinating, and deals honestly with realistic, though glamorous, people. It's third person omniscient viewpoint keeps the narrative very fresh. It deals with the great questions of life, but reads quicker than any Dan Brown novel.

The answer is The Bible. If you are Christian then there is no debate. If you are not Christian then it is still hard to overlook the great stories told and the life lessons taught in the Bible.
