You can travel freely to other Emirates. There are no checkpoints and no need the passport to travel from one Emirate to another.

Really if you are living in UAE for a while, you will be able to know from the surroundings ...

there are some known landmark to differentiate between emirates ... for example Al Nahda Flyover is in the boarder between Dubai and Sharjah... If you are going from Dubai to Al Ain (which is in Abu Dhabi Emirate) the boarder is in the middle of the 120 km road where the road changes from a four-lane to a two-lane road...

that is because each Emirate has its own municipality and has its own Standards like the traffic signals and signs (although they do not contradict)... other than that nothing can tell you ... there are even no signs telling you that you entered any emirate ...

Final word ... Each Emirate has its own Spirit :) ...

ya as all said u dont need any pasport to cross from one emirate to another and also there is nothing saying that u have enterd a different emirate .
only an expert who has been here long enough can tell u where one emirate ends and he other begins . these boundrues r only on papers and used for planning civil eminities by respective emirates and its governing bodies, for general public its free for all to travel and reside once uhave UAE visa .
just be sure that u r legal in the country .

There are no check points and you don't need a passport to go from one emirate to the other. There are just signs letting you know that you are in another Emrirate now. It's like going from one city to the next.

you can just see by the look of the place. when you see a lot of buildings or any trademarks of the place then you will know where you are. for example when you see the emirates towers then you're in dubai, when you see the AUS campus then you're in sharjah, when you see the etisalat tower and the emirates palace then you're in abu dhabi, when you see line of mountains then you're in fujairah. thats all.
