Im a teen girl and there are times when I feel my head is itchy but it is usually uncommon. Although, whenever I scratch my head I find a yellow-white solid underneath my nail. I do not think it is dandruff because normally, dandruff isn't so hard to remove. Dandruff can come off simply by brushing or shaking the hair. I'm very worried as I think I may have head lice but at the same time, I'm in doubt as I have never had lice before and I don't think my family has. Furthermore, I have not discovered any real live lice in my hair or actual eggs. But, I'm worried that the solid I find is nits or could it just be dandruff? Please advise.

That's not lice! It's just Seborrheic Dermatitis--dandruff eggagerated by climate, oily hair and a scalp trying to protect itself. Malassezia yeasts that cause this condition feeds on oils in your scalp. For that reason, having excessively oily skin and hair makes you more prone to dandruff. You can cure it the same way as other dandruff. I prefer Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo personally--It knocks out this more tenacius form of dandruff immediately. But I've had good luck with other brands and by not washing my hair excessively.

It is not likely lice, but more likely something called seborrheic dermatitis. This is similar to craddle cap for babies. As the skin gets dry and flakes, you can have matrix (from your blood cells) which trys to form a scab to heal the cracked skin. As you pick at your scalp you are liking seeing this as the yellowish substance. In the winter time this gets worse due to the cold dry weather. There are creams and shampoos to help. But one of the best things is olive oil. If you can stand the greasy hair for a bit. Try to rub it just on your scalp. Use a Q-Tip or cotton ball and part your hair, just rub it on your scalp and then put on a bandana or other head covering and go to bed. Let it soak in over night. Maybe wear a pony tail the next day as to not dry your scalp out even more from washing. Try to wash your hair every other day while you are experiencing this. That will allow your natural body oil to moisturize your scalp... Hope this helped.

Don't worry about what he said. We have head lice here in the US as well. I caught from a friend who got it from her granddaughter. All you have to do here is buy a kit at the drugstore and apply it to your hair. The eggs from the headlice will be very close to your scalp and can look like dandruff. If you need a home remedy I have had friends who used mayonaise, you cover the whole head with the mayonaise and wrap your head in a plastic bag and leave it in for a few hours.

What you are finding IS dandruff. The stuff that just shakes out are dry skin cells.
I use SeaBreeze (facial antiseptic) on my head every other night and it clears up dandruff real fast. Apply directly to your scalp.

i've had lice before and they r hard to find. most of the time, they will hide around your scalp. if u think u have lice, try washing ur hair with coconut shampoo and srub hard on ur scalp (coconut shampoo sufficates lice) or just go see a doctor.
