How do I find out the make and model of my motherboard? I'm running Window's 2000 and I'd like to upgrade my processor. If need be I will replace my motherboard. Offhand, if I have a Pentium 4 processor(1.6 GHz) what the best processor I could probably upgrade to?

Visit www.belarc.com, and download their Belarc Advisor. It'll tell you in minutes without opening up your case. And it's free.

most of the generation two socket 478 processor boards top out at a two point oh....to find out what type of motherboard you have look for the numbers usually in the center of the board. normally they are much larger than the rest and you can look it up online with google. if not and the board is green, you have an intel with a bios code and you can look it up through the manufacturer. if your board is socket 370 or 423 your probably topped out now and its not worth upgrading. you can tell the socket number by looking at the code on the white square where the processor sits.

the processor is not the only option to upgrading your computer. you can also go through the program inventory and elimnate unneeded programming and increase memory. along with basic maintenence like diskclean and defrag these can help too...good luck.
