Hi! I´m from Málaga and I´ve also been in Barcelona. Well, the second one is much bigger, there are lot of things to do, probably the university has got a high level but...you have to be sure that the lessons are in Spanish. Otherwise you´ll have to learn Catalán.
Málaga, on the other side, is cheaper, there are no so many foreigners, people are very friendly and the weather is great. We have an strong accent but you´ll get use to it.
So...I recommend you to consider what is more important for you: going out, people, university...
But, one thing is for sured...anywhere you go in Spain will be a great experience!!
Mucha suerte!

Wel if u wantto learn Sapnish dont go to Barcelona, they spaek aprt from spanish Catalan. So the have 2 officail languages. So go to Malaga, also the accent would be hard to understand its better than Barcelona, for learning Spanish. About going out and having fun, both cities offer lots of places to hang out.

Barcelona - the streets of Barcelona are alive by day or night, providing the visitor with a safe place for strolling around, whether for shopping, eating or simply passing the time of day. There is also 1 mile long city beach with clean soft sand, ideal for sun bathing. See http://www.spain4uk.co.uk/places/barcelona.htm for more details
