It was a random choice. It sounded nice with both words starting w/letter P, like Pittsburgh Pirates. And they wanted an animal mascot, and Pitt already had the Panthers.

It was chosen in part because Penguins are associated with ice and also because they are black and white. It was decided that they would follow the professional sports theme of the city and use the same color scheme as the Pirates and Steelers (the only city to have all their pro sports teams use the same color scheme) so the Penguin was a good match for the theme. Someone else mentioned the Golden triangle... a way to complete the color theme with penguin black and white. Not the greatest story about naming a sports team but that is pretty much how the name evolved.

viphockey4@sbcglobal.net is not right in asserting that they chose the Penguin because it was black and white, which was consistent with other Pittsburgh franchise colours. The Penguins were originally blue and white. They incorporated the black, white, and gold as a tribute to a previous Pittsbugh hockey team, "The Hornets," who were black, white, and gold. With that said, it could be possible that the Hornets were black, white, and gold for this reason (although probably just because that is how they appear in nature). Mind you that the Pirate's were not always black and gold either...

After deciding on the "Penguin" nickname, a logo was chosen, that had a penguin in front of a triangle, which is thought to be in tribute to the "Golden Triangle", the downtown section of the city where the team's arena had been built.

If you look at the arena, the roof is a white dome; nicknamed the 'igloo'; calling their team the 'Penguins' was a natural.

The animal of the Penguin. It really doesn't have any special history in that sense. It wasn't some naming contest or anything as far as I recall hearing.
