mp3 and mp4 are file formats. MP3 is a sound file, you play it on your computer in a media player like Windows Media Player or Winamp and it will make sweet, sweet music (unless... it's a crappy band). MP4 is a video file. Play it in a media player that supports it and your eyes will be treated to digitalized pixels on a screen.

An iPod is an average quality MP3 Player, it's hardware that plays MP3 files (as well as a couple other audio formats). Newer versions of the iPod feature color screens and support picture files (so you can view pictures on it) and video files (so you can watch videos or movies on it). Think of the iPod as a Walkman, and the MP3 file as a cassette. Except that Walkman supports thousands of cassettes at once and you don't need to swap them out.

Other examples of MP3 players include the iRiver H10 series, the Cowon iAudio X5, the Creative Zen series... There are quite a few alternatives, all with additional features and their own strengths and weaknesses.
