Well, according to recommendations, the arowana alone needs a minimum of a 250 gallon tank. Blood parrot cichlids need at least 50 gallons per grown fish, the Bala shark needs at least 70 gallons per grown fish, and I'm not sure what a red hook is, but as you seem to choose large fish, I can only assume it is a big fish too. Yes, arowanas eat live food first and foremost, but only if the fish are smaller, so you may not need to separate it from the other fish for that reason anyway. It does have some very different water requirements, so you might wish to separate it for that reason if no other. So, basically, taking into account the size requirements of the fish you have right now, you have need of two 250 gallon tanks here.

I believe by red hook, he means red snook, which get a foot and a half long. You absolutly can not house an arowana in a 42 gallon tank, at all, ever. You will stunt his growth and cause premature death. THis is a fish that reaches three feet long, and he requires at bare minimum a 250 gallon tank, BY HIMSELF. You could probably keep your other fish in a 150 if you overfilter and don't add any more livestock. If you cant provide proper housing for your fish, get rid of the arowana at least, I"m sure your lfs will happily take it. You need to do proper research before buying fish, and never believe anything people at the fish stores say, some are honest, but more are out to make a buck.

Arrowannas can get huge and will eat or kill thev other fish. A red hook is just a silver dollar witha hooked fin on the bottom,a very tempting treat for other fish swimming under it. The arrowanna will even die after ashort time in those cramped quarters. The parrot fish will be eaten soon,as soon as it fits in the mouth of the larger fish.

It would be a good idea to separate them. Arrowannas grow to 3 feet and are pretty aggressive toward other fish, and yours will likely kill your other fish.
