They call the police....

I have had this happen....I was short like 3.00.....I thought I had enough....I had money at home...but only took a few dollars with me for dinner...anyway..I offered to leave my phone...my purse...anything to let me run the 4 blocks back home to get the money....& she refused...she called the Police...

When the police got there I explained to them what happened...I just miscalculated how much I had in my purse...& I could run home to get what was missing....

The cop was kind of finding it funny over 3.00, but escorted me to my house...let me get the rest of the money..& told me "Next time...make sure you have enough....BEFORE you eat it.."...

I thanked him for being so understanding..& he walked out laughing....
I have not gone back in there again....& I honestly thought I had enough money to pay for everything...I didn't think about the fact that I was coming in when the prices changed from Lunch amounts to Dinner amounts......

In some areas it is a specific crime , so the police can be called . More usually , if it appears to be accidental , they will just get your name and address , you sign the check, and they will send you a bill , or expect you to come in and pay the bill.

If its a very small amount thats about all, if its a big amount , they would ask for security while one of you goes and gets some money.

They dont want you in the kitchen , possibly breaking things or injuring yourself.

They can't make you, but you can offer and they might accept. They might ask you to leave some sort of collateral (jewelry or an ID card) until you can get money to pay the bill. They won't call the cops to arrest you (and the cops won't arrest you) unless you intentionally went to the restaurant and intentionally left without paying (I studied law, that's not how it works). If you made an honest mistake, then they'll give you the benefit of the doubt -- but with collateral.

It's up to the manager. Usually they can call the police and press charges, but may not want to make a scene in the restaurant.
Personally, I would make you bus tables and do the dishes.

I work with a friend who used to be a waiter. She said this happens occassionally. Sometimes the customer bolted while others gave what they have. For small amounts, I believe they let the customer go but for high amounts, law enforcements will be called (unless the customer bolted).

Only in the movies do I see them making the customer do dishes.

Dine and Dash? Don't try it. If you can't pay the bill, don't go to the restaurant. They don't make you wash dishes. They have you arrested.

This happened to me when I was teenager. My friend's boyfriend stole the money and pretended like he had no idea what happened to it. It was so embarassing, they called the police and of course the police was acting all like "now you kids know better"blah blah blah. My family owned a pizza place so of course my friend says this to the cop so they(the cops) drive me down their(I got to sit in the front seat) to get money to cover it. There was like a bunch of people that I knew and I was mortified. I didn't know that he had taken it until later when my friend was laughing about it with some other friends. But I got my last laugh, about a month later, the boyfriend got arrested and needed bail money($25) so she comes to me to bail him out. I say yes, we go to the police station and suddenly I couldn't find my money, whoops. It was friday so he had to spend the whole weekend there. Ha-Ha.

That happened to me once. They didn't make me do dishes but they pulled my pants down and spanked my rear. I must admit I kind of liked it. The next time I go out to eat I may "forget" to bring money again.
