Here in the UK . . . I usually take Pavacol D for dry tickly coughs . . .. this can be bought over the counter at most reputable chemists. I do not feel drowsy when drinking this but some people do so if you are affected you should not drive or operate machinery. [see ref 1. for how it works].

There is another product called Buttercup [2] - but not sure how effective it is. Check with your local pharmacist who will advise on its suitability.

I also inhale lots of steam and drink plenty of fluids as very often the cough can turn into a cold.

hi,

Home remedies for cough are:

* Prepare a mixture by adding a teaspoonful of honey with a few drops of brandy. It helps to relieve cough.

* Garlic-and-onion chicken soup is also an effective remedy for cough .

* Mix half a teaspoon of tulsi juice with half a teaspoon with ginger juice. Add 1 teaspoon of honey. Take the above mixture 2-3 times a day till symptoms subside.

* Peel 50 grams fresh ginger and cut into small slices. Boil the slices with 100 grams maltose in 2 glasses water for 30 minutes. Drink it hot, twice a day, in one day.

Hope above natural remedies will help you !!

For a dry cough - and I got this from a Chinese friend-boil up a can of coke, the real stuff, not the diet one; add in some freshly grated ginger, and the washed whole roots of a bunch of scallions(spring onions). Simmer for 5 minutes, allow to cool, strain and sip slowly. I guarantee it works.

Drink the juice of one lemon before going to bed. If it's a wet cough, this will loosen it up and allow you to cough it up and spit it out.

Here are some versions:
Take one lump of sugar; dissolve it in a little hot water in a mug; add a piece of cinnamon, a lemon twist, four cloves, and an ounce of whiskey; and then fill the mug with hot water.
(You can use molasses or honey instead of sugar, rum or brandy can substitute for whiskey, and allspice and nutmeg are other possible flavors to put in the mix.)

depending on what kind of cough it is...... if its a dry cough then breathing in steam helps, lots of hot drinks, a fresh lemon squeezed... hot water and a spoon of honey.... or hot ribena.
if its a chesty cough steam also helps lift it.... if your coughing up nasties you prob need anitbiotics ....... also wrap up warm and go for a gentle stroll in the fresh air.... usually does wonders in killing bugs....

my granny also insisted that chicken soup... homemade was good for a cough... worth a try i guess.

Mucinex. Last week I had brochitis -- the Mucinex actually stopped my coughing. Not slowed it down or made me cough less - but stopped it cold. I swear by it now.
