Which came first the chicken or the egg?

Major phobias are a result of hereditary memory. Our ancestors had reason to fear snakes and heights, so those fears were passed on to future generations.

Well, our fears have been turned into the scary movies. That is where they get their inspiration.Sure they extrapolate on them a bit for entertainment's sake, but without our fears, we would be watching comedies all the time.

Fear is innate.

I was not allowed to watch horror movies as a child nor did I know much about racism but when i was a teenager I drove past a KKK demonstration (yep white robes and hoods) b/c I was driving to the store for my mom and passing this sight was unavoidable. I am hispanic and the hate I felt from those people was real and the fear I felt of them was very real. Like something right out of a horror movie; my heart raced and I was terrified. It was very surreal. That's it ... terrifying and surreal to be so hated for something I had no control over ... my genes, my skin color, my last name.

Well, to me, it depends on which movie it is. If it is a Chucky movie, then I think it is just ignorant. If it is the movie "House Of Wax", that causes fear for me. Not the "afraid of the dark" fear, but the whole point in getting cut in the back of the ankle, getting your fingertip cut off, being chased by some sick weirdo, and being kidnapped, that is scary. Some other movies like "Halloween", I enjoy them, but I won't watch them alone. And thats a Fact.

Actually I think it is the other way around. I am prone to nightmares and twitchy fears. In fact I can freak my self out every easily.

Most of my very real fears that I cannot talk my self out of come from my personal experiences or that of what has happened to members of my family.

I get worried about people looking in my windows. My mother walked in to find someone looking in my bedroom window (that I share with my little sister) trying to take the screen off.

I am scared to find intruders in my home terrorizing my pets (happened when I was a teen sort of)

I am scared of odd noises in the house because of these things.

OK now I won't sleep tonight thanks.

As for Movies most of them I can talk those fears out of my head.

OK off bar and lock the doors and windows.

Well,It depends on the age at Which u watch these movies
for example If you are a kid movies with monsters will scare you to death as kids have a great imagination and these fears may accompany you when you grow up,also when u have inner fears they become greater after watching horror movies as they awaken them but are not the source of'em.
for me,Final destination movies scare me so much as they are much more real than the other monster or alien movies.

Yes. My kids' fears of going into the kitchen, bathroom, living room, or even their bedroom in the dark started when they first watched a horror movie on TV.

This is supposing that there were no fears before there were movies. Was that true? Probably not. I do think that movies do a good job playing on our fears and certainly don't help those with fears.

My husband was not allowed to watch horror movies when he was young and he says that when he went camping with the boy scouts, he was the ONLY one of those boys not afraid of the dark. Is it because he didn't have the horror movie ideas planted in his brain? He thinks so.

Fear lives inside all of us. Horror movies can bring that fear out, but the cause is from something that lives deep inside us.

No they are not. It is the other way around. Our fears can inspire the stories that ultimately become "horror" movies; which in turn can further enhance/magnify said fear
