There is still heated debate over this topic. It is obviously named after Saint Valentine a man of god serving in Rome during the period of Claudius II. Claudius decreed that no man could be wed during his reign. He wanted his men's minds on the front lines of expanding the Roman empire not at home with loved ones. One clergyman, Valentine defied the law and married a young couple. For this they were executed and he was either placed in prison for life or placed in prison until his execution. Either way years later after his death he was accepted into Sainthood as the "Saint of Love" as far as the day we celebrate it. Some people say it is the day that birds choose their mates. Other say the day was picked by the church to honor the saint. Either way in medieval times a custom of placing single people's names in boxes and then drawing them and pairing them on this day for one year was started. It was said the this person was your valentine, hence our modern day traditions.
