A 2 year old computer isn't too bad, but if it's not upgradible, i would opt for a new computer (if it's in your budget). The only way to upgrade your current computer, would be by getting a new motherboard that has more RAM slots, etc...

If you're a PC person (like myself), 90% of the desktops out there now come with the new Windows Vista, no less that 1.0gb of RAM, and usually 120gb or more Hard Drive space, and dual core, if not Core 2 Duo processors, which are more-than-decent for standard machines.

As far as Mac's go....I'm not the person to ask.

hope this gives you some insight.

They are lying to you.
You can replace old RAM with new larger pieces. You can get up to 2gb pieces. 1gb pieces are about $80 from newegg.com.
You can have up to 4 drives of any kind using your ide connections (two per cable).
You can even uprade to a SATA 2 (3 times as fast as ide) by getting a SATA 2 pci card. They are only $20, and a 250gb SATA 2 drive is only about $80. A 80gb is only $50. Or you could get an external usb drive, which are a little slow.
What you really want to do is get a new motherboard and cpu and use it in the old case. Then add a GB of Ram, a SATA hard drive, and finally a good graphics card. That should only be about $450-550 depending on what you get.

If you replace your computer's RAM with bigger capacity chips, it doesn't matter how many slots you have, unless you're kicking around 1GB on one chip, then it doesn't get much better than that.

Hard Drive Space... You can get an external Hard Drive that plugs into USB, and a power jack, and it would function just like a normal hard drive on your computer. Or, a decent computer tech at BestBuy or Circuit City can UPGRADE your hard drive by copying all your current stuff onto a new bigger one. And it's not expensive at all. ($40-60 for an automatic transfer.) Once you have the bigger one, you can keep the smaller one for backup or in case you get a new system with more slots.

Unfortunately, older computers can only be upgraded so far. They are limited to how much upgrading can occur. You probably should buy a new desktop. They are much faster, and even have a better operating system. You can upgrade them almost with the click of a button. On your old computer, if the memory slots are full, and the hard disk is full, you cannot make it any faster.
Good Luck

If you absolutely must get a pre-built system, I would suggest either Dell or HP - they have a broad selection of computers, and their prices are decent. The only cheaper option that I know of is to buy a used computer, and that's generally a bad idea - either the computer is too old to be useful, or it's for sale because it's been abused and will likely die on you soon (or needs a lot of work to be restored to good working condition).

When you walked in they must have seen SUCKER on your forehead. Seems they were drunk and did not know what they were talking about or had it in for you for some reason.

If you have not added any Hard Disk Drive (HDD) to your computer, you could say buy a 300 Gb HDD and add it. So on this they were wrong.

The two URL (save and bookmark them) have articles on buying a computer, like how much, what to look for, and so fourth.

If you email me your computer brand and model number I can tell you what to do and get as far as ram and disk drive. I have my notepads, and I just cut and paste the answer to you as your question is common to ask. Also use the following to tell you what you have on your computer. Book mark this too.

Also, did you know sometimes in the US Sunday paper they have computer specials too. I saw one for CompUSA for $99. The catch was you paid $599 and then get $500 in rebates back. I was too late to get one. But they run specials time to time.

If you decide to get a new one again let me know and I can give you my two bytes worth.

Instead of trying to /add/ ram and hard disk space, you need to /replace/ it. The company just wanted to sell a new computer to you. I would suggest taking it somewhere else and telling them you want to replace the hard drive and ram so you do't get scammed

buy alienware computers! they are the most powerful machines in the world. well, they are good if you use it for gaming.

for normal use such as playing music, using internet, typing documents, then any computer will do fine.

i wouldn't buy a computer just yet.. maybe wait a few months to make sure there's no problems with the new windows vista.
